The Southwest Response Team’s Fire Investigative Unit is comprised of 39 fire investigators and one accelerant-detecting canine that are employed by 18 municipal fire departments. These individuals work across jurisdictional lines to investigate fires whether of accidental, natural or incendiary nature. A major tasking of the FIU unit is education. Monthly investigative meetings and attendance at national and regional investigative seminars are used to increase investigators’ knowledge of fire origin, cause, scientific methodology and legal issues. Through this educational process and the ability of investigators to participate in numerous fire scene investigations, quality fire investigations are conducted for the SERT municipalities.
