HazMat was the first fire service technical team authorized by the Southwest Council of Governments in 1991. It was then known as the West Cuyahoga Hazardous Materials Response Team and drew its membership from the 16 communities that at the time comprised the Southwest COG. In 2000 the name was changed to SERT–HazMat. The mission of the team is to provide assistance to the incident commander of a member community to assist in the resolution of a hazardous materials incident, whether intentional or accidental in its genesis. SERT–HM accomplishes its mission by training its members and providing them with state of the art PPE, product identification instrumentation, communication equipment, and access to other specialized resources if necessary. We enjoy mutual aid agreements with the other HazMat teams in the region. Currently, SERT–HM would be considered a Type II Hazmat Team.
