The trench rescue division of SERT provides specialized equipment and highly trained personnel in the event of an excavation emergency involving cave-in and entrapment. Construction excavations or "trenches" are prevalent in all communities, whether a product of fast paced suburban growth, utility work, infrastructure repair, or basic home improvement. The trench team utilizes a rapidly deployable cache of equipment and technician level trained team members to mitigate potentially lethal situations. The goal, with the use of a variety of equipment and techniques, is to quickly establish a protective system to prevent further injury to the victim, and to facilitate entry of a rescuer to provide medical treatment and free the entrapped. The team works within the incident command system to coordinate a rapid rescue operation, to account for the safety of all throughout the event, and to assist the governing agencies in the investigation of the incident.
